These classic gold round wire rim antique eyeglasses are in mint condition and ready for prescription lenses or sunglasses. The bridge is marked ''SR 14KT RG'' and the arms read ''FRAME MADE IN ENGLAND SAVILE ROW ce''. The markings mean the frame is 14 karat gold-filled. The glasses have a smooth, simple design with no engraving.
These are great panto shaped frames, size 45-20, made by Savile Row in London, England. Note the strong bridge construction, the generous extension in their special, center-set hinges, the fine finish, the clear nose pads, all nice details in a very high quality frame. If it looks familiar, it should - it's a really famous frame. This model was worn by John Lennon, among others. You'll see there are a variety of frame sizes offered and several temple options, too. They come complete with a case and cleaning cloth from Savile Row. Savile Row frames are some of the few frames in the world still made using a gold-filled finish, as opposed to modern, thinner, plated finishes. There was a time when most frames in the US and abroad were gold-filled, but no more. A gold-filled frame has a thicker coating of gold and this means they'll last decades longer than plated frames. (In the UK, they call the finish ''rolled gold'', but it's the same process we call ''gold-filling'' here in the US... layer upon layer of gold is mechanically pressure-applied to the base metal frame, resulting in the thicker gold coating.) They even carry a two-year warranty, double the length of most any manufacturer warranty. Great frames, ready for decades of fashionable service!
Wire rims are flexible, so lenses can be made to a variety of shapes for this frame. This style is worn in the panto shape, but can also be worn with round lenses or other shapes. Temples are measured their full length, hinge to tip, as though they were straightened out. Why? Because they're adjustable, so measurements to the bend vary. Lens and bridge measurements are from lens edge to lens edge. Hinge to hinge is measured from screw to screw. Many English frames have been worn with covered rims and there are many rim color options. There are too many available to list here, so if you're seeking covered rims, please contact me with an idea of what you're seeking and I'll let you know what I have in stock that might fit the bill. Colors typically on hand include: black (gloss and matte), a wide variety of materials generically called ''tortoise'', golden amber, grey, white and even blue. Temples are available in both cable and skull. Temples can also be covered in the same sort of material as the rims, though the choices there are not quite so extensive, limited to matte black, chestnut and a medium blonde (lighter brown/amber). Again, please contact me for details on the coverings. Note that the special order sizes and all of the covered temples are ordered from overseas, which can take up to 6 weeks. In any combination, whether one of the in-stock models or a special-order size or configuration, these are great frames ready for many years of service. All frames are thoroughly inspected before leaving the Attic. I'm thorough about condition so there are no surprises and these glasses are in mint condition. They'll make great everyday glasses or some very cool sunglasses.
Cable temple covers to fit these frames can be found here (1.3 traditional) and here (1.5 heat shrink). If you have any questions about this pair of glasses or anything else, please don't hesitate to contact me. I try to answer all questions promptly.
